December Section Meeting

Wednesday, December 6th – 6:00 PM CT
Jefferson State Community College Welding Lab- Shelby/Hoover Campus, Birmingham, AL

JSCC Shelby/Hoover Welding Lab is a 5000 sq. ft. facility that was constructed in 2020 and opened its doors to students in January of 2021 with 6 students. Classes have grown over the last few years, and there is a total student count of 66 as of the FALL 2023-24 term.  Apprenticeship programs are set-up with 5 employers currently, but more are always needed to accommodate the number of students who are interested in a career in welding.

We will have a guest speaker for the night who is going to talk about the importance of the formation of relationships between business/industry and education/training. Robert Shepherd was born in Birmingham and attended West End High School.  He started his education in welding at LeTourneau College in Longview, TX where he became a Welding Engineer.  Robert served our country for four years in the United States Army and then went to work for Westinghouse in welding field sales.  In 1976, he went to work for Miller and McKay and had an esteemed career with them until he retired in 2011.  Robert spent his entire career in sales and training related to the welding industry.  He continues to work in various capacities, and currently serves as a lab assistant at the Shelby/Hoover campus of Jefferson State Community College.
