Recap: Skills USA Welding Championship

On June 15th 2021 the National Skills USA Welding Championship was held. This year each state winner competed at there own school. The competitors had four projects to complete. SMAW, GMAW, FCAW all Carbon Steel and 1 GTAW Aluminum. The students started at 8:​00 AM and had 1-hour to complete each project with a 15 minute break between each project. Each student also had 30 minutes to complete a Visual Inspection Exam and 1-hour to complete a Welding Knowledge Exam. All welding and exams were recorded and sent to the National judge panel for review. The welded projects were inspected by a Certified Welding Inspector on site using the printed inspection criteria provided by the competition committee. Each inspector participated in a two hour training specific to the inspection criteria provided for the competition.

Diman Regional Technical School Senior Cody Ferreira (below) took second place in the nationals. Cody’s instructor and mentor was Diman welding instructor David Salsinha. Many hours of practice were put in over the past few years.
