Welding in Space Presentation at UNCC

Welding in Space

Amourette McDonagh, Welder Fabricator and CEO of Black Moon Welding is presenting on Welding in Space, adventures with NASA and the USSF, as well as experiences on a Cup series NASCAR team, and as a member of NASA’s Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium, aka the “Lunar Base Team”. This talk will cover the history of welding in space, what is currently being done, and the future of welding in space.

Cold welding is a “naturally occurring problem” that has yet to be harnessed as a useful welding technique, and what’s even more convenient than sticking two pieces of super cold metal together and creating a fully functioning weld, but space is technically already an ideal welding environment whose potential has not been investigated enough.

“Astronauts have been trained to run a few experimental welds, but a highly trained and skilled welder has never been sent to space as an astronaut, yet.” A direct quote to me from the director of human space flight at Marshall Space flight center. Someone needs to do it if we want to truly advance human space flight.

I hope that you have lots of questions now, because there will be a group discussion after the presentation and we hope you can join us!

Dinner will be provided for this event
