Presentation title: Heat Treatment an Essential Variable in Welding and Energy Construction

Presenter: Gary is a 1982 Industrial Engineering Graduate of Georgia Tech. He worked for 20 years, in a variety of technical roles in rotating machinery, within the Air Compressor Group of Ingersoll-Rand Company. He then joined Miller Electric in 2000 as the Director of Business Development starting a new Division focusing on Specialty Piping and Advanced Welding applications. In 2006 Gary joined Superheat FGH, a Global leader in Field Heat Treatment Services, working with Power Companies, Refiners and Engineering Contractors to improve the Quality of Field Heat Treatment, through advanced Control technologies, Productivity innovations and Project Management strategies. Gary is a member of AWS, ASME and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. We are happy to have Mr. Lewis here today to present information on the importance of heat treatment and welding!

Abstract: Expanded use of new steel alloys in Energy Construction are causing people to take a closer look at field heat treatment and alternative weld methods. Experts are suggesting that roughly 90% of material anomalies and premature component failures, in Grade 91 and other CSEF steels, can be attributed to improper Pre- and Post- Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT). While the benefits of CSEF steels are well documented and growing in popularity, welding processes and application skill sets become more critical than on more traditional carbon-based steels making Pre and PWHT more significant than ever before. As a member of AWS, Committee Member on AWS D10.10, industry leader and innovator in Advanced Industrial Heat Treatment Services, Mr. Lewis will shed some light on some of the pitfalls arising from limited understanding of heat treatment in welding, shortcomings of traditional field service practices, relevance to construction and repair codes like ASME and NBIC, understanding the role heat treatment plays in material fitness for service and achieving design life, and new employment opportunities in the industry.

We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,

The AWS Colorado Section Board
