Walter is known for presenting information in a simple straight forward manner and should be very educational for anyone involved with welding.

Bio

Walter J. Sperko, P.E., is a welding engineering consultant who specializes in the codes and standards associated with piping, pressure vessels and boilers. While he has a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, he has not taught at a college or university. Rather, he has been teaching others since 1975 when he taught welders, foremen and inspectors at his employer, ITT Grinnell Industrial Piping, about welding technology and metallurgy. In 1979 he became an instructor for a publicly offered course in piping design, analysis and fabrication sponsored by the Center for Professional Advancement and in 1982 he developed a 3-day seminar on how to use ASME Section IX sponsored by ASME. He has been teaching and continues to teach these courses several times each year, passing his knowledge about welding technology and codes related to piping, welding and inspection on to engineers, inspectors, welding supervisors and welders.

Since 1994, Mr. Sperko, who is a past-chairman of the ASME Section IX committee, has published articles annually in the Welding Journal summarizing and explaining the changes that were made to ASME Section IX so that those welding or brazing piping, boilers and pressure vessels would understand the new rules. He has also regularly presented technical papers and presentations at AWS events and conferences, including AWS’s annual presentation of “So You’re the New Welding Engineer.”

Mr. Sperko is  Fellow of the ASME and a Counselor of the AWS.
