Section News Update

Hello Everyone,

As everyone is well aware, we are stuck in the Covid-19 affair. Due to the restrictions at the time, the section was closed down per Nationals instructions. With that being said, several things have occurred behind the scenes with the board. The biggest item is that the board and members at large from 2019-2020 will be carried over to 2020-2021. With that being said, in May of 2021 we will have elections for the up coming year. We do have open positions for the 2020-2021 year. We have the 2nd vice chair, publicity chairman, technology, and student liaison seats open. If anyone is interested please contact the section secretary.

Unfortunately this years welding competition for the high school tech students was cancelled. The call to cancel it was done with heavy hearts and the decision was not made till early June. We have found a location to store all the prizes, competition material and other items till next March. High Steel was our sponsor for the banquet. The funding for the banquet is being stored for next years award banquet. We greatly appreciate our sponsors for this event, High Steel Lancaster, Lincoln Electric, Air Gas of Reading, Metabo Power tools for working with us and being so supportive, Also the many judges, students and instructors and the welding competition committee for all their hard work. Next year will be great!

The scholarship board and executive board was able to increase the amount of the sections Millennium scholarship to $2000.00 this year. The scholarship committee did select a recipient for the Reading section 100 Millennium scholarship. The selection was done blindly and scored on a points scale. The recipient for this years scholarship is Jack C. Yengo. Jack is a junior at Pennsylvania School of Technology, pursuing a BS in Welding and fabrication Engineering Technology. Jack was awarded a plaque on June 20th. Please see the sections website, under the scholarship tab for more information about the scholarship.

The biggest news for the section was the recovery of the sections Library. Thank you to RV Industries, Rich Heisey, and Craig Davis for all their efforts in making this happen. The library will now be inventoried, stamped with a property of stamp and then be reopened for use by the members. One big change regarding the library will be that the books may not leave the physical location of the library. For procedures on how to access the library, please contact the sections secretary.

The section was audited in February by an independent auditor for nationals. The section did well, with some minor adjustments having been recommended. This was the first audit that the section had in approximately 10 years.

We the board have some exciting things in the planning process. We are looking to have a CWI Q&A night, a past chairman’s/board members night and finally a career night. Anyone interested in helping or ideas please feel free to contact the board.

Sorry for the long length of this email. As always, any questions please feel free to contact anyone on the board. We look forward to the up coming year and continued growth of the section.

Sincerely,
The AWS Reading Section Board
