2018 Welding Regional Results

Pike Central Vocational Welding students swept the top five places at the Region 4 Skills USA Welding Contest held at Vincennes University on Saturday, February 3. Six Pike Central Vocational Welding students competed with Forest Park junior Elliott Wiseman placing first. Elliott received a $2,500 scholarship from Vincennes University; and a $5,000 scholarship from Ohio Technical College.

Placing second was Pike Central senior Chase Brenton. Chase received a $1,000 scholarship from Vincennes University; and a $3,500 scholarship from Ohio Technical College.

Placing third was Forest Park senior Luke Jacob.  Luke received a $500 scholarship from Vincennes University; and a $2,500 scholarship from Ohio Technical College.

Placing fourth was Forest Park Junior Nick Werner. Nick received $500 scholarships from Vincennes University and Ohio Technical College.

Placing fifth was Forest Park senior Nick Seaton.  Nick received $500 scholarships from Vincennes University and Ohio Technical College.

The top five students from each region will advance to the State Contest that will be held at J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis on April 13-14.  The state winner will represent the State of Indiana at the National Contest held during the last week in June in Louisville, Kentucky.

Students were evaluated on the following:

  • 100 question welding theory written test
  • S.M.A.W. process required welding a tube to plate in the vertical position using an E7018 and E6010 electrodes
  • G.T.A.W. process required welding a flat square groove butt joint
  • G.M.A.W. process required welding a flat tee joint, lap joint and a square groove butt joint
